BOOK EXPO 2007: Thursday, May 31 to Sunday, June 3 - Jacob Javits Center, New York An eventful 4-days where exhibitors and attendees from around the globe gathered at the Javits Center to review new title releases while participating in educational sessions, controversial panels, and meetings with publishers and editors. During these sessions many books were bought and sold. It was a whirlwind weekend, and a productive one for our agency. On Thursday I was at Random House for a scheduled meeting with the publicist for New Hope for People with Bipolar Disorder Revised 2nd Edition, pub date: October 2007. Friday, Book Expo with back-to-back meetings with publishers and editors from early morning to late afternoon when the Center closed at 5:00. Highlights, and the first order of business: a meeting with the staff of Sourcebooks, Inc. to discuss the transfer of our books from Champion Press, Inc. All books will be remarketed, some repackaged, titles with low inventories will go back to press, and new releases rescheduled. Also, congratulations to Paula Munier, Director / Product Development at Adams Media Corporation, who was just promoted to the position of Innovation Director. This is very good news for us since we work closely with Paula, and now she will have greater authority and control. By the time of my departure I had acquired more than 40 pounds of books and catalogues. Exhausting, but fruitful!
NEWS RELEASE: Tuesday, May 29, 2007: Champion Press, Ltd sold to Sourcebooks, Inc. After months of deliberation, Brook Noel, Publisher / CEO of Champion Press, Ltd took decisive action by selling to Sourcebooks, Inc., a decision faced by many small publishers in recent years. With 12 Champion Press authors (16 total books), our investment in this house was significant and Brook made sure we were first to receive the news. Sourcebooks carries a similar line of books and shares the same publishing vision, but as a mid-size house they offer greater marketing ability. We applaud Brook Noel for her foresight, by entrusting her authors with a house that has embraced all Champion Press authors and their books, and we welcome Sourcebooks!
MIDWEST WRITER’S CONFERENCE—Thursday, July 13, 2006; Davenport, IA: Founded thirty years ago, the Midwest Writing Center offers opportunities for writers and readers throughout the Quad Cities region. Nancy Rosenfeld will address the conference, focusing on what literary agents and book publishers look to acquire in today’s highly competitive and crowded marketplace. For more information, go to: http://www.midwestwritingcenter.org and click on “Writer’s Conference.”
AAA author, DOROTHY MEITA ROTH: We are saddened to report that AAA author, Dorothy Meita Roth, died suddenly May 30 as the result of a medical error. Her book, LOVE SAFARI: from Cape Town to New York (from illusion to reality), represents Dorothy's legacy and we were close to contract at the time of her death. Ms. Roth had just been speaking with her two daughters about three more books to follow Love Safari, when the injection she had just received for a broken arm instantly ended her life. Dorothy Roth was a pillar of the community in Allentown, Pennsylvania. http://dorothyroth.com/
ERIC COGSWELL BIPOLAR DISORDER MEMORIAL CONFERENCE—Friday, May 5, 2006; Portsmouth, NH: Nancy Rosenfeld will deliver the Keynote Address at the 6th Annual Eric Cogswell Bipolar Disorder Memorial Conference in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (Saturday, July 17, 2004) Chicago, “the Windy City,” defied all odds as everyone gathered Saturday evening under clear skies, balmy 70-degree weather, and no bugs in celebration of AAA’s first summer gala. Glorious atmospheric conditions following months of rain and unseasonably cold temperature.
Getting to Chicago was another story! Friday afternoon, as the marquee was going up in the garden and tables were being set for 85 guests, stranded travelers began phoning. Chicago’s airports had shut down due to a severe thunderstorm watch. For AAA’s hostess Nancy Rosenfeld, it was instant panic since most guests were arriving by air. Nevertheless, everyone safely made it despite flight delays up to seven hours and one case of lost luggage.
Most creative traveler: Glenn Campbell, author, NAKED VEGAS: A Totally Cynical Guide to Sin City), who drove to Los Angeles to connect with a flight to Chicago after finding nothing available that originated from Vegas.
Heartwarming reunion: Chuck and Bobby Carroll. With the help of a private investigator, Chuck Carroll (author, Hard Candy: Nobody Flies Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) located his brother in New Jersey, where he flew from his home in California in time to escort Bobby to Chicago for the party.
Roasting the Host: - Brook Noel, President / CEO; Champion Press, Ltd. - Jan Fawcett, MD, Author - Bernard Golden, PhD, Author - Michael Steinberg, Literary Agent - Bob LaZebnik, brother of Jack
Readings: - Shyam Amladi: “Why Me?” And further observations of the confused American Male - Glenn Campbell: NAKED VEGAS: A totally cynical guide to Sin City - Joe Gumm: Due Dads: a comical guide to assisting your spouse with a natural birth; - Bill Melms: How to Stay Afloat Wearing Army Boots
